A 71 year old man has received an estimated £20,000 out-of-court settlement after he was chased by police who smashed the window of his vehicle and kicked the windscreen when he stopped.
Robert Whatley of Usk, Monmouthshire, was stopped by police for failing to wear a seatbelt. After receiving and on-the-spot fine and thinking that the police had completed their investigations, he drove off. However, the police still wanted to speak to him and chased him for 17 minutes before he finally pulled over again.
It was at this point that Gwent police officers approached his car, smashing the drivers window with a baton. Another officer was seen to jump on the bonnet of Mr Whatley Range Rover and begin kicking windscreen.
Mr Whatley sued Gwent police for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and received an undisclosed sum believed to be around £20,000 in an out-of-court settlement.
Gwent deputy chief constable Jeff Farrar said: "Gwent Police have not accepted any liability in this matter, however contesting the matter further would have incurred substantial legal costs if the case had gone to court.
"Therefore, whilst we maintain our position that we do not admit liability, a decision was made to settle the matter out of court on financial grounds."
